Merci!

Nope.

It’s not that I felt grateful. That’s not why it’s “Merci” but it’s because it’s a store that holds unique stationery. Now take a look at this entrance!!!  Mysteriously? populated by this un-known rather cute vehicle.

Let me guess… The owner rode it to do a world hunt for unique design? The store is full of goods that inspires earthy, simple lifestyle.

Bookbinders… One more location to find good gifts?

From the little I could see it looks like they are scandinavian design. Too simple for my taste but what a location!!!! It is in the middle of young fashion and design concept shop area of Paris. Lovely products shine even more when they are displayed with Lamy pens and Lyra crayons and pencils.

Lovely shop to wonder in…hmmm but just something missing. Wonder what that could be….

In Paris, one Sunday afternoon

Leather and stationery can not be separated…fine leather crafting and stationery often go hand in hand and that’s why, a show window like this from MORABIDO capture my attention.

Florentine logos on a note brings a special charm…

You know…when you have to send a note to your neighbors, or your professor, your casual friend, you want to express nice intentions not just with words but with the whole act of sending a note.

In fact, today with e-mails, this may not be too necessary, but let’s say you have a nice neighbor and sending them an e-mail feels a little silly,  but trying to catch them coming out of their door, is not practical.  So, I still have some people around me who appreciate note sending, or posting a memo on the door or exchange of goods I need to deliver, etc.

This particular design works for all, I mean ALL kinds of occasions and it leaves a very positive note. The symbol resembles the “coat of arms”, but it is mostly used as nice decoration.  Not as heavy and valuable as the thick cards in envelope, but a lot nicer than the “post it”s.  Also, the medieval emblem gives a retro touch which fits perfectly with the act of writing, but not too ancient as in papyrus with bird feathers.

It may not be for some gentlemen given the decor. So I will have to come up with something equivalently nice unisex. Let’s see…

Misuzudo 美篶堂

I finally arrived ! to the finest (my humble opinion) notebook binding house in Japan. They are located in Ochanomizu, not too far from Akihabara where the latest tech-gadgets bustle in and out and around. The place holds a small atelier along side the shop, where you can see demonstrations of book binding classes. There are display of products with warm but pristine finish, the soft high quality paper, and the place is filled with atmosphere created by the warmth of its paper people and finished products.

The name Misuzudou (美篶堂)comes from a name of a place in Nagano prefecture in central Japan, and is the home town of the founder Matsuo Kamijima. They pronounce them selves as “book binders” and devotes themselves to producing beautiful books and notebooks, which they do so well.

One astonishing thing is the notebook you pick up here, when you open them, lye completely flat and open from day one, and until the day you finish using them.  I am sure all of us have experience writing in a nice diary thread bound new notebook that does not stay open and we either have to stick in a pen or something to keep the page when you leave it behind to say make your self a cup of tea. The bindings are sturdy that way, but it is very difficult to write towards the center side of the page, and although its to be expected, it is such a reward when you find a real quality binding notebook that does this.

One of the products I like from this place is the “accordion albums”  this is just the right size to keep your favorite photos, or collect cards, etc and scrap them. If you are an artist, it becomes one very unique and fun catalog of your work.

My next edition of Misuzudo article will be how was the usage of their products and then… what i felt. In this visit, I bought two notebooks, 2 post cards, 1 album and one small catalog. I will share them with you soon!

Where there is life, there is Stationery

Dear Readers,

When was the last time you took a pen and wrote on a piece of paper?

Speaking of my self, I do quite a lot of writing. For what? Personally, I write something on paper for something that;

  • are so very personal that I need my own handwriting to express it.
  • I cannot let dissapear just because there is no electricity one day.
  • I would like to share with people who’s older than 75. (Usually loving family members.)
  • need to express sincere gratitude, special wishes, or message accompanying a gift I hand deliver.

On the contrary, I use electronic writing for something that;

  • needs ot be shared with lots of people, or copied. (Less than 75 years old)
  • needs structure and system that needs repetition(Like calendars, inventories and business PLs)
  • send a quick message, intention, (e-mails)
  • when I need to chat and I don’t have money enough to call them every day

Still thinking on what goes under the list, but humans are intelligent enought to use tools according to different needs. So, yes, we have computers, tablets, smart phones, etc to WRITE, but we still NEED to use our own hands to express some things. And of course it is very personal so there are many people out there probably not in NEED to hand-write or use notebooks and pen and paper, but some people do, and that is why, I believe that pen and paper will not die soon. It is just one type of tool over many variety of tools to express thoughts made available to us. And that is why, stationery is still going to be there where there is life, and as long as pople learn to write from day 1 of our elementary school!

Lace or Cards? debate at the Marais

Such delicate creations, obviously hand crafted, captures the precious intentions of the people who send the message, and multiplies the charm exponentially! I found it in a stationery shop in Paris Marais, address to be checked and updated. But first take a look at this product!!

If you take close look at it, and flip the card to see the back of these carvings, you find that the pattern has been made using a burning equipment as it has a brownish burn edging the pattern. I would like to really find out how these are made, and that will be my mission the next time I get there.

Firenze as Pinnochio Notebook Resides

In Florence, there are great frescos by Giotto and Fra Angelico, but they are not the only thing that captured my heart. There are amazing shining stationery as well. Among notepads with Florentine logos, and traditional italian leather goods, there resides a charming entrance to the world of Pinnochio at a tiny store located on the pebble stone back ally of Florence.  When you open this black and red notebook it gives the person a sensation that you are part of the story.  The entire store focuses on this particular theme of logo, of this notebook entertaining children and adults with young hearts alike.
